When was Maison Francis Kurkdjian founded?

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was founded in Paris in 2009 by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and managing partner Marc Chaya, structured as a perfumer-led atelier with a permanent collection and bespoke work.

The essentials

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was founded in 2009 in Paris (France) by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and business partner Marc Chaya. The house opened its first boutique on rue d'Alger near the Tuileries with an initial collection signed entirely by Kurkdjian, breaking with the editor-curator model of Frédéric Malle or Serge Lutens in which an impresario commissions external perfumers. Here the founder is the perfumer (Maison Francis Kurkdjian official, accessed 2026-05-29).

Francis Kurkdjian (born Paris, 1969) trained at the ISIPCA school in Versailles before joining Quest International. He composed Le Mâle for Jean Paul Gaultier (1995) while still in his mid-twenties, a formula that became one of the best-selling masculine fragrances worldwide. He continued composing for Burberry, Narciso Rodriguez, Lanvin, Dior and others through the 2000s, then founded his own house with Chaya, an Egyptian-Lebanese business strategist (Fragrantica, accessed 2026-05-29).

The house's international turning point was Baccarat Rouge 540 (2015), originally commissioned by Baccarat for its 250th anniversary and added to the permanent line. Its amber-cedar-saffron signature, anchored by ambroxan and a cedrol-class molecule, became the most imitated niche formula of the decade. LVMH acquired the house in 2017; Kurkdjian remained creative director and was additionally appointed perfumer-creator of Christian Dior fragrances in 2021.

The 2009 founding in Paris

The house opened in 2009 with a coherent inaugural lineup: Aqua Universalis, Lumière Noire pour Femme, Lumière Noire pour Homme and two limited editions. Distribution was deliberately narrow at first, with the Paris flagship plus a handful of niche retailers. The founding economic model combined the fragrance catalogue, bespoke private commissions, room sprays and Le Beau Parfum collaborations.

Marc Chaya, a former senior partner at Ernst & Young, structured the company commercially. Kurkdjian retained full creative control and composed every fragrance in-house. The choice was structurally important: it positioned the house as a perfumer's studio rather than as an editorial curator, a model that other founder-perfumers have since followed.

Francis Kurkdjian, perfumer and founder

Francis Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969 to an Armenian family. He entered ISIPCA at 18, then joined Quest International (now Givaudan) and trained as a junior perfumer under Pierre Bourdon. His commercial breakthrough came with Le Mâle for Gaultier in 1995, composed when he was 26 years old. The fragrance has remained in the top selling masculine perfumes globally for nearly three decades.

Over the 2000s he composed for several major houses, including Iris Nobile for Acqua di Parma (2004), Rumeur for Lanvin (2006) and APOM for Maison Francis Kurkdjian later. His public visibility before founding the house came partly through external interviews and his work on the artisanal water creations for the Château de Versailles fountains restoration. The dual identity, salaried perfumer and house founder, is rare in the industry.

Baccarat Rouge 540 and the 2015 turning point

Baccarat Rouge 540 was launched in 2015 as a limited edition commissioned by the Baccarat crystal manufacturer for its 250th anniversary. The fragrance was added to the MFK permanent catalogue the same year due to demand. Its signature combines ambroxan, saffron, jasmine and cedrol-class woody molecules in a radiant warm amber accord that projects strongly and clings to fabric.

The formula became the most imitated niche fragrance of the late 2010s. Dozens of mainstream and affordable niche releases borrowed its central accord. The launch is also commonly cited as the moment when niche perfumery crossed into mass cultural awareness, helped by social media and music references. Baccarat Rouge 540 retails in the eau de parfum format around 240 to 290 € (260 to 320 USD) for 70 ml (2.4 oz).

The LVMH acquisition and what changed

LVMH acquired Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2017 for an undisclosed sum. Kurkdjian remained creative director and Marc Chaya continued as chief executive in the early years following the acquisition. Distribution expanded through LVMH-aligned networks and the house entered selected Sephora and international department store channels, while keeping its flagship boutiques.

In 2021 Kurkdjian was additionally appointed perfumer-creator at Dior Parfums, alongside François Demachy who retired that year. The dual role with Dior and MFK is unusual: it integrates a founder of an independent niche house directly into a major luxury brand. Community discussions on Fragrantica and Basenotes have generally reported that MFK formulas have kept their quality and structure post-acquisition.

The current catalogue and house architecture

The catalogue is organised in three layers. The permanent collection includes Aqua Universalis, Aqua Celestia, Baccarat Rouge 540, À la rose, Amyris and several others. The Maison collection groups higher-concentration extraits such as Grand Soir, Oud Satin Mood and Petit Matin. The limited editions, often seasonal or commissioned, change annually and are not maintained in stock.

Beyond fragrance, the house produces scented bubble bath, candles, room sprays and bespoke commissions. The bespoke service remains active, with private compositions priced from several thousand euros. Distribution today covers more than 50 countries, with MFK-owned boutiques in Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong and Dubai, plus selective placements in specialist retailers (Maison Francis Kurkdjian official, accessed 2026-05-29).
