The format ranges from utilitarian travel sprays in the 5 ml (0.17 fl oz) range to design-led wallet or pocket atomizers up to 20 ml (0.68 fl oz).
Cheap atomizers use untreated aluminum that may react with perfume materials over time. Quality models use food-grade anodised aluminum with an inert internal liner, which prevents any chemical interaction between the metal and the fragrance even after months of storage.
How the spray mechanism works
The pump assembly draws liquid through a thin dip tube each time the wearer depresses the actuator, sending it through a fine nozzle that breaks the stream into a controlled mist. The dose per spray is typically 0.08 to 0.12 ml, comparable to a full-size eau de parfum spray. The mist pattern is calibrated to project at 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 in) for normal wear use.

Filling and decanting safely
The cleanest decanting method uses a small glass funnel or a syringe with a blunt tip to transfer fragrance from a full bottle into the atomizer without contact with skin or air. Top-down transfer by coupling the atomizer to the full bottle's pump head is faster but wastes 2 to 5 percent of the fragrance in evaporation and overflow.
Hygiene matters: a contaminated atomizer can degrade fragrance over weeks of storage. Conservation and storage limits
An aluminum atomizer extends the wearing window of a decanted fragrance but does not preserve it indefinitely. The opening and resealing of the reservoir each time the wearer refills introduces oxygen, which slowly oxidises the more sensitive materials. Citrus-led compositions decant well for 6 to 9 months in a 10 ml atomizer kept at room temperature; denser oriental or woody compositions hold for 12 to 18 months.
Storage conditions matter as much as the bottle. An atomizer kept in a glove compartment exposed to 40 °C summer heat degrades faster than one kept in a hotel bathroom at 22 °C. Wearers who travel frequently are better served by smaller atomizers refilled more often than by a single large atomizer carried for months.
