Definition
Indie perfumery, short for independent perfumery, groups perfume houses whose capital is not controlled by a major fragrance group such as Estée Lauder, LVMH, Coty, Puig, L'Oreal or Interparfums. The criterion is ownership, not company size or olfactive style (source: Highsnobiety, State of Fragrance 2025).
Ownership criterion
An indie house can stay small or reach international scale while remaining unowned. Diptyque, founded in Paris in 1961, shows indie status at scale. Niche perfumery describes a restricted distribution model and microniche an artisanal production scale: neighboring concepts, but distinct.
Independence can also be reclaimed. Lubin, a Paris house founded in 1798, passed through several owners before becoming independent again in 2003 under Gilles Thévenin.
Acquisition debate
The 2014 to 2022 decade saw a wave of acquisitions. Le Labo and Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle both joined Estée Lauder in 2014 (source: WWD). By Kilian followed in February 2016, Maison Francis Kurkdjian joined LVMH in March 2017 (source: LVMH), and Byredo sold a majority stake to Puig in 2022.
Can an acquired brand still claim to be indie? Osmetheca's editorial practice is to date the deal and flag the owning group on every house entry.
