Iso Gamma Super

Iso Gamma Super is a Givaudan synthetic aroma chemical with a creamy, smooth, sandalwood-like woody character, widely used in niche and fine fragrance as a sustainable substitute for endangered Santalum album (Mysore sandalwood) (Perfumer & Flavorist, accessed 2026-05-27).

Definition

Iso Gamma Super belongs to the family of gamma-methyl ionone derivatives. Its olfactive profile combines smooth wood, creamy sandalwood, and a faint powdery-floral undertone. It emerged in commercial use during the 1990s, 2000s as CITES restrictions on Santalum album made natural Mysore sandalwood economically and ethically difficult to source (Fragrantica, accessed 2026-05-27).

Unlike ISO E Super, Iso Gamma Super has a clearly woody-sandalwood identity perceptible at moderate concentrations and is not a captive molecule in the strict sense.

In composition

Iso Gamma Super appears in niche woody-oriental compositions, modern chypres, and sandalwood-forward soliflores. It blends with rose, iris, ambroxan, musks, and citruses. Its longevity on skin is superior to most naturals.

Related woody molecules in the same functional class include Javanol (Givaudan), Polysantol (Givaudan), and Ebanol (Givaudan), each offering slightly different facets of the sandalwood-woody accord spectrum (Basenotes wiki, accessed 2026-05-27).
