Definition
Microniche, also written micro-niche, describes a sub-segment of niche perfumery defined by a very limited production scale. A microniche house is generally led by a single perfumer, sold directly without traditional retail distribution and produced in runs typically under 500 bottles a year. The defining criterion is scale, not olfactive style.
Origin and history
The term emerged in enthusiast communities in the early 2010s, in the wake of houses such as Slumberhouse, founded in Portland (United States) by self-taught perfumer Josh Lobb, who started selling his fragrances on Etsy in 2008 (source: Fragrantica).
The segment broadened with the COVID-19 pandemic. Pineward Perfumes, founded in Colorado (United States) in November 2020 by Nicholas Nilsson, illustrates that wave (source: Pineward Substack). The rise of Substack as an editorial channel for perfumers between 2023 and 2025 amplified the movement.
Use in perfumery
Microniche houses share several converging traits. Hand production, generally handled by the founder. Direct distribution through the house website, Substack, Etsy or a handful of specialty retailers such as Luckyscent. Limited editions and an openly personal relationship between the perfumer and the customer base.
Houses such as Areej Le Doré, led by perfumer Russian Adam, illustrate the model with small series sold out within days (source: Luca Turin).
