The house
Jean Desprez was an independent French perfumer and couturier who operated in Paris (France) from the 1930s onward. He is remembered primarily as the creator of Bal a Versailles (1962), a composition that achieved significant commercial success in France and internationally during the 1960s and 1970s. Desprez positioned himself in the tradition of couture-adjacent perfumery, with presentations that referenced the grandeur of Versailles and classical French decoration.
The Jean Desprez brand subsequently passed through multiple ownership changes and the original house effectively ceased independent operation. Bal a Versailles has been maintained in production by successive rights holders and remains the defining reference for the Jean Desprez name in contemporary perfumery.
On Osmetheca, Jean Desprez is represented by one fragrance: Bal a Versailles (1962), signed by Jean Desprez. This oriental composition built around rose, jasmine, sandalwood, amber, musk and civet became one of the commercially successful orientals of the 1960s and a reference in the classical French oriental tradition. The house page for Jean Desprez is not yet published on Osmetheca.
