Story

Neroli Outrenoir was released in 2016 by Guerlain within the confidential L'Art et la Matière collection, the haute parfumerie line of the Parisian house founded in 1828. The composition was signed at four hands by Thierry Wasser, in-house perfumer at Guerlain since 2008, and Delphine Jelk, perfume creation director at the house (source: Guerlain).

The creative premise was borrowed from painting. The name Outrenoir directly refers to the series of black monochromes developed by Pierre Soulages from 1979 onward, in which the French artist worked the light reflected off grooves and reliefs carved into a fully black surface. That tension between absolute black and captured light became the olfactive program of the fragrance: confronting neroli, the bright white flower distilled from the bitter orange tree, with a dark backbone of smoky tea, myrrh and incense (source: Fragrantica).

The olfactive architecture therefore articulates two poles. The white pole is carried by a dense hesperidic cocktail, where bergamot, petitgrain, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit surround the neroli signature. The black pole settles in the heart with a smoky black tea accord and earthy facets, then extends into the base on vanilla, myrrh, oakmoss, benzoin and ambrette. Neroli Outrenoir belongs to a strong trajectory of the L'Art et la Matière collection, opened by Guerlain in 2005 to explore precious raw materials in a haute parfumerie format. The collection includes reference compositions such as Cuir Béluga, Angélique Noire, Musc Outreblanc, Bois d'Arménie, Tonka Impériale and Rose Barbare. The fragrance is offered as an eau de parfum in the square L'Art et la Matière bottle, inspired by the 1870 Guerlain Square Bottle and manufactured by historic glassmaker Pochet du Courval, here dressed in black lacquer (source: Guerlain).

Since its release, Neroli Outrenoir has established itself as one of the contemporary pillars of the collection. Guerlain extended the success in 2024 with a reorchestrated eau de parfum and in 2025 with a hair mist, while keeping the original formula in the catalogue. Critics now consider the fragrance one of the most singular neroli compositions on the contemporary market, a register otherwise dominated by sunlit Mediterranean readings of the material (source: Parfumo).

Evolution on skin follows the conceptual program. The top opens in a green hesperidic wave dominated by petitgrain and bergamot for the first twenty minutes. The heart then settles for two to four hours on the neroli versus smoky tea contrast, the recognisable signature of the fragrance. The base extends for five to eight hours on the vanilla-myrrh-oakmoss frame, with orange blossom lingering as a soft thread.

The olfactive profile of Neroli Outrenoir articulates an immediate hesperidic burst, an orange blossom dressed in smoky tea, and a resinous drydown where vanilla and myrrh hold light at the edge of shadow. The whole composition reads as a citrus aromatic, distinct from the sunlit Mediterranean neroli register usually associated with the material.

The distinctive signature rests on the pictorial contrast Guerlain claimed at launch. Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk treat neroli not as a solar material but as a light captured inside darkness, in the manner of grooves carved into the black paint of Pierre Soulages. The smoky tea accord functions as the olfactive equivalent of worked blackness, which lets the whiteness of neroli reflect a denser, almost mineral light.

Neroli Outrenoir transposes Pierre Soulages' outrenoir into perfumery: orange blossom no longer bursts in Mediterranean sunlight, it shimmers on the surface of a near-black smoky tea.
